Job description

The New York Times seeks an Agile Project Manager for the Data Platforms Mission to work with our data infrastructure teams.

The Data Platforms Mission core goal is to supply the organization with timely and reliable data and to build first-rate intelligence and flexible tooling. Our engineering teams work side by side with analysts, data scientists and product teams around the company to drive business outcomes and create best in class data driven user experiences. We build data driven products from A/B testing platforms to real time event tracking to algorithmic recommendations and machine learning platforms.

As an Agile Project Manager you support the development teams’ various needs, filling the Scrum Master role or facilitating Kanban to developing project and program milestones and managing integration phases. You facilitate retrospectives and continuous improvement, keep the team on track and in alignment during high level planning, and coach the team in developing actionable OKRs. As a core member of these teams, you are expected to identify issues, suggest solutions, or help negotiate scope or timelines when necessary to advance a project. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” here; each team will require different levels of involvement and intensity of Agile processes.

We Count On This Role To Drive

  • Project Leadership - Work closely with Product and Engineering to shepherd various types of software development projects from inception through completion. Call out issues between competing interests and personalities to create alignment on priority, scope and realistic timelines.
  • Agile Adoption - Champion and support agile software development practices, and tailor that process (including scrums, planning, review and retrospective sessions, demos and more) to each project team.
  • Collaboration - Guide the Team and key stakeholders to navigate challenges on the road to successful delivery. Influence teams through servant-leadership.
  • Visibility - Ensure shared understanding of project objectives and success criteria across the entirety of the project team. Communicate effectively and drive a free flow of information with and among stakeholders on all matters.
  • Transparency - Track and communicate project status, risks, and emergent issues. Organize complicated information so that it is readily accessible to varying stakeholders and can be kept current with minimal overhead.
  • Continuous Improvement - Help identify systemic issues, process problems, and other risks and work with the appropriate colleagues to find resolutions. Facilitate retrospectives at the Team and project level, turn the output into concrete improvements in process.
  • Impediment Removal: Actively seek out, track and escalate impediments to the Team’s throughput and barriers to project completion.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in how people work together to create great software products, at the right time with the minimum of friction and waste. Commitment to personal learning and growth, self awareness with the ability to learn and grow from mistakes.
  • X - Y years of relevant work experience in project management of software development in an Agile environment.
  • Hands on Scrum Master experience in software development, some formal Agile training, or participation in an Agile software development team.
  • Superb communication skills, including the ability to communicate between stakeholders and the cross functional product development group.
  • Growing technical fluency. You like understanding how multiple systems fit together and can communicate technical ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A basic understanding of big data (or desire and ability to learn), machine learning, cloud platforms and APIs, and an interest in new technologies. Previous specialization in Data is a plus.

About The Team

The Delivery Engineering team is a critical part of The New York Times’ engineering organization. Its responsibilities are deeply technical and include system observability, cloud architecture, developer tooling, and development process, to name a few. The primary goal of the Delivery Engineering team is to build tools/automation and SRE practices for product engineering teams, enabling them to deliver and take operational responsibility of their own software in a consistent way.


About The Job

As a Technical Product Manager, you will:

  • Lead the product strategy, roadmap and execution for a cross-functional platform and infrastructure team
  • Identify opportunities and drive impact based on user needs, technical capabilities and business impact
  • Employ user feedback and platform metrics to drive system designs and product prioritization
  • Clearly and effectively communicate launches, roadmap status, and platform performance across the organization
  • Build cross-departmental collaborative relationships with partners that includes engaging them in the goal-setting process, defining high-level priorities and flawless execution
  • Scope technical requirements and write product use cases and specifications with Github, JIRA, and other tools
  • Own and communicate performance metrics and provide insight to drive product development recommendations

About You

  • You are passionate about powering the New York Times business through performant, reliable and easy-to-use platforms
  • You have 5+ years of technical product management or related technical experience at a medium-to-large-scale media or consumer product company
  • You have experience in scaling platform capabilities across a large organization
  • You’ve demonstrated deep technical expertise to manage multiple product lines
  • You’re an expert at closing the communication gap between technical and non technical stakeholders
  • You have experience delivering tech programs or products from inception to delivery
  • You have a deep interest in understanding customers; an expertise in contributing to new, reliable and self-service platforms; and the ability to communicate your work through detailed documentation and architectural diagrams
  • You have a technical background, including knowledge of frontend, backend, infrastructure and mobile application technologies, and experience in an agile environment
  • You have an analytical approach and experience working with large-scale systems
  • You are able to operate autonomously across multiple teams to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
  • You are adaptable and are comfortable with ambiguity and have experience responding quickly to evolving threats and opportunities
  • You are deeply collaborative and have experience driving to solutions while working with a wide array of stakeholders and partners.
  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or experience working as a developer. This bonust not a requirement
  • Cloud, DNS, CI/CD, Observability, SRE experience strongly preferred
